Fatboy Slim, a.k.a. Norman Cook, has assembled a supergroup of sorts called The Brighton Port Authority who've released two singles. According to NME.com, they'll issue their I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat debut album on Feb. 3.
Cook is joined in The BPA by David Byrne, Iggy Pop, Dizzee Rascal, Martha Wainwright, Jamie T, Jack Penate and Emmy The Great, among others.
The first single/video, "Toe Jam," featuring Byrne on lead vocals and a rap from Rascal in the bridge, came out in the summer. A couple of fans have made their own videos for the song in addition to the clever, nudity-filled official clip, all of which can be viewed on The Brighton Port Authority's website along with interview clips featuring some of the project's participants. Seven different remixes of "Toe Jam" can also be purchased from the BPA digital music store.
The BPA's cover of British '80s post-punk band The Monochrome Set's "He's Frank" (featuring Pop) was used in the second episode of this season's NBC television series Heroes in September. It can be found on the BPA site along with second single/video "Seattle" (featuring Emmy The Great) and "Should I Stay Or Should I Blow" (featuring Ashley Beedle).
Cook has built an aura of mystery around The BPA by creating a fictional history of the group, who are said to have "built a huge word-of-mouth reputation on England's south coast from the early 1970s onwards before petering out in the mid '90s." The album was apparently assembled from a number of tapes found in a cardboard box at a Brighton dockside warehouse.
