Nova Scotia And Newfoundland Award Winners

Wintersleep
The music associations of both Nova Scotia and Newfoundland held their annual award shows over the weekend, and Wintersleep and Hey Rosetta! were among the respective frontrunners.

Music Nova Scotia members chose Wintersleep's Welcome To The Night Sky as best album and group recording. Group members Paul Murphy, Tim D'Eon, Loel Campbell and former bassist Jud Haynes shared the SOCAN Songwriter Of The Year Award. Wintersleep, who are now based in Montreal, are touring in the U.S. and were unable to attend the show at John Brother MacDonald Stadium in New Glasgow on Sunday night, which was hosted by country artist George Canyon.

Cape Breton's The Tom Fun Orchestra received the Galaxie Rising Star new artist/group award for their Gordon Gano-produced You Will Land With A Thud debut album. The nine-piece band were also voted entertainer of the year in the category's first-ever public online vote, which attracted more than 2,200 people.

The other double-winners were banjo-playing folkie Old Man Luedecke, pop/rock singer/songwriter Christina Martin and blues singer/guitarist Thom Swift.

Rebekah Higgs' "Parables" was named best video, while Rich Aucoin's Personal Publication was deemed the top alternative artist/group recording. The full list of winners can be found on the Music Nova Scotia website.

Meanwhile, 700 kilometres farther east at the Arts And Culture Centre in Gander, Nfld., Hey Rosetta! took MusicNL Awards for group, entertainer and pop/rock artist of the year. The group's win total was only surpassed by jazz guitarist Duane Andrews, who was honoured four times, including Raindrops being named best album.

St. John's 10-piece reggae/ska band Idlers received the Galaxie Rising Star Of The CBC Award and were also named best alternative artist/group for the songs from their Corner debut album.
