The Decemberists' Colin Meloy is in talks to work on a musical.
Meloy met yesterday with Michael Mayer and actor/producer Tom Hulce (Amadeus). Mayer and Hulce are both the respective director and producer of Spring Awakening, a Tony Award-winning rock musical. According to CMJ, Meloy met with them in Portland this week to talk about the possibility of working on a musical, which doesn't yet have a title.
Interestingly, Meloy recently told Paste Magazine that The Decemberists' upcoming new album, Hazards Of Love, was "originally conceived as a musical... but I decided about halfway through my time in France that it wasn't going to work as a stage piece. But it would still work as a rock record, so that's where it ended up."
Meloy also told the magazine that the album is a sonic amalgamation of Anne Briggs, Nic Jones and Shirley Collins.
Hazards Of Love, which is being produced by Tucker Martine (Mudhoney, Sufjan Stevens), who also helmed 2006's The Crane Wife, doesn't yet have a concrete release date. Prior to dropping it, The Decemberists will release three 12-inch singles as part of a singles series called Always The Bridesmaid.
