Emo kids rejoice! My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way is in talks to turn his comic books into a movie.

Universal recently optioned Way's The Umbrella Academy comic book series and Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Children Of Men) has reportedly expressed interest in directing it, though no one's currently signed on to the project. Way told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that it could hit theatres in 2010 or 2011.

"He's the only director who has the material at the moment," Way told NME.com. "If we get the right people in place, it could be really amazing but I'm trying not to think about it too much. I'm keeping my head focussed on the comics.

"I would prefer people to read the comic first as a point of reference before any film comes out. But the first story (The Apocalypse Suite) is really compact with a beginning, a middle and an end so you could easily make that into a film."

Way also told the Los Angeles Times that he doesn't want the comic book, which is based on a group of superheroes who begin fighting crime again after their father's death, to be turned into another Harry Potter and would prefer it if it's more like "Harold & Maude meets the X-Men."

Way told the newspaper that he's interested in scoring the film with someone else and creating music that sounds like RJD2. He also said he's interested in getting Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody involved.

The first issue of the comic's second series, Dallas, will come out on Nov. 26. He told NME.com that it would be "more political" than "The Apocalypse Suite," and the third series would be "more violent."
