VanGaalen's Soft Airplane #1 For 6th Week

Only By The Night
This column is becoming a bit of a broken record over the past month. Each week as the various charts are input to the chart compiler machine, it seems that newly released albums are building up support in order to topple the reigning king of the charts, Chad VanGaalen. But when the dust has settled early Monday afternoon, VanGaalen’s Soft Airplane continues to sit in the #1 spot for another week — six weeks and counting.

Remaining in the #2 position from last week is Mother Mother’s O My Heart with TV On The Radio’s Dear Science, rising 11 positions to land at #3. TVOTR’s big jump forces Land Of Talk’s Some Are Lakes down a place to #4 while Stolen Minks’ High Kicks remains at #5 this week. Below this there is a whole pile of chaos as the rest of the top ten wasn’t in the top ten a week ago. The biggest jump among these five entries was made by Deerhoof ‘s Offend Maggie, which catapulted 28 places to land at #6. Novillero’s A Little Tradition moves up a more modest eight places to #7 followed by the split EP by Stamina Mantis/Shearing Pinx five spot jump to #8. Also rising five positions to #9 is Elliott Brood’s Mountain Meadows while Pack A.D.‘s Funeral Mixtape ascends ten places to land at #10. Novillero, Elliott Brood and Pack A.D. all have spent time in the top ten in previous weeks.

The Chart Sizzler award goes to Kings Of Leon’s Only By The Night, debuting at #17. The album charted highly on four radio charts, including #1 at CISM (Montreal), #2 at CFRE (Erindale) and #8 at both CIUT (Toronto) and CILU (Lakehead). The self-titled album by Friendly Fires garners the runner-up position among new entries arriving at #23. Kellarissa’s Flamingo debuts at #27, Marnie Stern’s This Is It... enters at #33 followed by Husband And Knife’s An End arriving at #34.

Wolf Parade’s At Mount Zoomer continues to creep closer to upper echelons of the longevity records on the top 50 chart, though at 16 weeks it has a couple of months to break New Pornographers’ Mass Romantic run of 25 weeks. At Mount Zoomer does move up three spots to #32 this week. Elliott Brood’s Mountain Meadows has survived for 14 weeks while the totally under-the-radar album, Telepathic Butterflies’ Breakfast In Suburbia remains on the chart for 11 weeks without once appearing in the top ten.

Over on the five specialty charts, there wasn’t much movement at all at the top of these charts with only one top ten chart experiencing a change in its top-rated album. Bison BC’s Quiet Earth remains at #1 on the Metal/Punk chart. Chiwoniso’s Rebel Woman continues to dominate the World/Folk chart having sat at #1 for five of the past six weeks. Dandi Wind’s Yolk Of The Golden Egg remains #1 on the Electronic chart for a third consecutive chart, while Josh Martinez’ The World Famous Sex Buffet sits at #1 on the Hip Hop top ten for a second straight week. The only specialty chart with a new #1 this week is the Jazz/Blues top ten which is topped by Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Kinsmen, rising up a position to topple Jane Bunnett’s Embracing Voices from the #1 spot.
