When civil twilight fell on Edmonton on Sunday night, The Weakerthans took home three Western Canadian Music Awards.
Although last year's Reunion Tour didn't win this year's Polaris Music Prize, that album garnered two awards for The Weakerthans — the outstanding independent album and songwriter(s) of the year honours — and one of its songs, "Civil Twilight," won the video of the year award. The band had been nominated for a total of four awards at this year's event, which was hosted by CBC Radio 1's Jian Ghomeshi.
Other big winners included country singer/songwriter Corb Lund, whose Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! won the award for outstanding roots recording - solo, and rockers State Of Shock, who won the outstanding rock recording award for their Life, Love & Lies.
Feist, K.D. Lang and Nickelback were awarded international achievement honours, since they've all sold very well and become well known outside of Canada in recent years. Senator Tommy Banks and Spirit Of The West were also inducted into the WCMA Hall Of Fame.
The Western Canadian Music Awards is an annual event which recognizes the achievements of musicians from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.
