Ringo Starr won't sign your stuff after Oct. 20 because he's sick of items he autographs ending up on eBay.
The former Beatles drummer took some flak earlier this week for a video post he made on his website in which he said he would only sign fan mail until the aforementioned date.
"Nothing will be signed after the 20th of October," Starr says in the video. "If that has the date on the envelope, it's gonna be tossed. I'm warning you with peace and love, but I have too much to do. So no more fan mail. Thank you, thank you. And no objects to be signed — nothing!"
The video ignited some controversy in the media and amongst fans. Entertainment Weekly magazine said it would take Ringo Starr's fan mail so he didn't have to, and celebrity blogger Perez Hilton made a post on his website titled "Ringo Starr's A Pompous Ass."
"What's keeping him so 'busy'??!!??" Hilton wrote.
"He's 68 years old!
"Is he trying to drive up the value of Ringo signed stuff out in the marketplace?"
Starr responded to the controversy in a statement on Thursday in which he said his request that fans not send any more fan mail was "in direct response to an inordinate amount of items which have recently appeared for sale on e-bay, and to those that repeatedly send cards and items to be signed."
Starr also said his fans should be "mindful" of their carbon footprints and not waste paper by sending fan mail. He also stated that he has "always signed fan items and is in fact the only Beatle to have been doing so."
"How amazed am I to the reaction to my video update," Starr said. "I hope this statement gets as much. Please read this in a mellow way. Peace and love, Ringo."
