Teenage Head frontman Frankie Venom has died.

According to a press release, Venom (real name Frank Kerr) died on Wednesday of natural causes. Venom was 51 years old.

Venom formed Teenage Head with guitarist Gord Lewis, bassist Steve Mahon and drummer Nick Stipanitz in Hamilton in 1975. The four went to Westdale High School together, but weren't friends.

Their first single, "Picture My Face," came out in 1978 and they soon acquired a following in Toronto. Their self-titled album came out a year later, and they soon became known as the "Canadian Ramones."

Venom left the band in 1985 and was replaced by Dave Desroches. Venom later reunited with Lewis, Mahon and new drummer Jack Pedler. The band hit the studio in 2003 to record new material with Ramones drummer Marky Ramone. That album, Teenage Head With Marky Ramone, came out earlier this year.

Additionally, The Last Pogo, a documentary about a 1978 Teenage Head show at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern which ended in a riot, was released on DVD earlier this year. Filmmaker Colin Brunton recently began making The Last Pogo Jumps Again, a documentary about what happened to all those who were at the gig.

Frankie Venom is one of the reasons CHARTattack.com exists. My first concert was sometime in the late 70's early 80's. CNE Grandstand in Toronto. Teenage Head opening for Triumph. Teenage Head drove onto the field in a large limo. Fantastic show and it plunged me into punk rock in a major way. And it lead to all my various music industry ventures including Chart Magazine and this website. Frankie Venom RIP! I thank you for all you did.

I recall with great clarity picking up the first Teenage Head album in 1979 and being laughed at by all my "rocker" friends who had yet to discover the joys of minimalist production and the virtues of brevity in the songwriting process. Within a year or so they had changed their minds and TH became a big part of all our lives as music fans - especially the band's scrappy, energetic gigs.

Cheers, Frankie. Well done.

So sad.  First time I saw them play was in Oshawa around 77-78. I was at the front, Frankie was singing Picture my Face, he fell on me, I fell flat on my back but still managed not to spill my drink.  He picked me up and then grabbed my drink and downed it.   Teenage head were probably one of the first punk bands Canadian kids ever saw as they toured the country back then.  They were really raw and kicked ass live.  Think I saw them about 100 times.   Will miss them.   My heart goes out to Gord, Steve friends, fans and family.
