You'll be able to hear Simple Plan's version of the iconic "Hockey Night In Canada" theme next week.
Simple Plan will record their version of the track on Friday in Montreal, and it will debut on Oct. 15 during a Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens game that will be televised on TSN and its francophone counterpart, RDS. The networks acquired the rights to the iconic song earlier this year when CBC couldn't close a deal with composer Dolores Claman to keep using the song.
"This is a very cool and huge honour for a bunch of diehard hockey fans," says drummer Chuck Comeau. "This song was a huge part of our childhood and we are all stoked to have the chance to put our own 'Simple Plan' twist on it and to record it for the millions of hockey fans tuning into TSN and RDS."
Simple Plan are the first in a series of artists to record their versions of the track. A day before Simple Plan's theme premieres, TSN will begin using the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's recording of the "classic" version of the theme to launch all of the network's NHL games.
The CBC has also launched a contest for a new hockey theme to air during their broadcasts. You can vote on the two finalists here until 11:59 p.m. on Friday. The winner will be revealed during Hockey Night in Canada’s first broadcast of the season on Saturday evening.
