Fat Mike Talks Sex

NOFX member/Fat Wreck Chords founder Fat Mike isn't afraid to be blunt. It's a good thing, too, because with his latest venture, Sex Talk Show — a live, phone-in sex advice show accompanied by Canadian syndicated guru Josey Vogels for Toronto-based PunkRadioCast — the notorious punk rock icon can't exactly be shy. Having tackled issues ranging from legalizing prostitution to bestiality and all points in between, the hour-long bi-weekly program is the epitome of honesty.
"Being in a band for so many years, singing about my life and wearing my life on my sleeve, I don't have a problem talking about anything," says the man born Mike Burkett. "As years go on and the drunker I get, I let stuff spill.
"'Oh geez... that's out there.' Why keep any secrets?"
And how exactly does one go from punk rock institution to sex mentor? For Fat Mike, it's far from a stretch. Having received a minor degree in human sexuality some 20 years ago, yet never utilizing it aside from impromptu advice, he's excited at the opportunity to finally apply his hard-earned efforts on a broader scope.
"For years, my band had been saying, 'Why do you always talk about the same shit every night after shows? All you do is fucking talk to people about sex and give them your fucking advice?' I went to school for that... It's something I've always been interested in, not to mention I'm a fuckin' pervert.
"It always comes up with me, so when PunkRadioCast gave me a call asking if I wanted to do something, I was like, 'Sure!' Working with Josey is great because she knows her shit. It's a female perspective and we really come at the questions with different angles. We work really well together."
While the ingeniously named Sex Talk Show currently airs every other Friday at 6 p.m. on punkradiocast.com, Fat Mike aspires to see it blossom into something far greater. However, unless given Howard Stern-esque freedom to be completely candid, he doesn't believe it will happen anytime soon.
"I'd like to do a syndicated weekly show. I think it's interesting enough, but it can't be on any commercial station that's censored. I've got a potty-mouth, and when discussing sex you have to talk explicitly, not to mention that I want to talk as I would to a friend. I don't want to have limitations or be thinking about my language. I just want to be talking.
"Right now, though, I love it. It's awesome and I hope I can continue to do it for a while. But then again, I don't like to work very hard at anything in my life, so doing an hour-long show once a week is plenty for me."
