Brian Borcherdt Likes Coyotes

Brian Borcherdt is a solo artist in addition to being a member of Holy Fuck. He'll release a new solo album called Coyotes on Oct. 7 through Toronto's Hand Drawn Dracula Records.

Borcherdt recorded Coyotes with By Divine Right's Jose Contreras on a break from touring with Holy Fuck. Most of the songs feature little more than Borcherdt's guitar and voice, and most of the tracks were recorded in Contreras' living room in a single take.

"Just as I hit puberty, I picked up a guitar and started writing immediately," Borcherdt says. "I guess one could assume that I did so in order to meet girls or become popular.

"Actually, in my small fishing town, playing guitar or expressing yourself creatively led to alienation, maybe even name-calling and other forms of harassment. So my guitar became my weapon, my method of protest. In other words, all of my early music involved noise and screaming. I guess at some point I mellowed out, and sang more of tender issues, heartbreak and all that. And yes, sometimes it got a little 'emo.' But I never wanted to censor myself or my feelings. I just wanted to write. That's all I want to do still."

Borcherdt was previously in Trephines and By Divine Right and founded the Dependent Music label. Holy Fuck's second album, LP, made the short list for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. The winner will be announced at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre on Monday night.
