Sarah McLachlan and her husband of 11 years, Ashwin Sood, are splitting up.
Two new songs on McLachlan's upcoming hits collection chronicle their break-up. "U Want Me 2" and "Don't Give Up On Us" are both included on Closer: The Best Of Sarah McLachlan, which comes out on Oct. 7 through Sony BMG. McLachlan penned both songs with her longtime producer Pierre Marchand (Rufus Wainwright, Ron Sexsmith). Sood plays drums in McLachlan's band and the couple have two daughters: six-year-old India and Taja Summer, 14 months.
"I wasn't planning on saying anything, but it's gonna come out at some point," McLachlan told Billboard.com. "I haven't said anything about it because I've been terrified to, but I figured... there's no good time to say it, so I just said it."
McLachlan called her situation "pretty gross," but didn't elaborate any further.
The ChartAttack office rumour mill is now speculating on the next Canadian female star to split with her musical hubby. Will it be Avril Lavigne? Chantal Kreviazuk? Nelly Furtado? OK, she's only engaged, but she previously dumped the DJ father of her daughter Nevis.
"U Want Me 2" will be released as a single, while Closer: The Best Of Sarah McLachlan will be available as a single disc and in a double-disc deluxe edition.
McLachlan hasn't released a new album since Wintersong, an album of Christmas-themed music, in 2006. Her last studio album of original material was 2003's Afterglow. She's working on material for a new album, which she hopes to have out within two years.
