Drew Wright Eliminated From Canadian Idol

Canadian Idol loser Drew Wright
The final Canadian Idol showdown was made official on Tuesday night when Drew Wright was kicked off the show.

With the Collingwood, Ont. native gone, the face-off comes down to Mitch MacDonald and Theo Tams. I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find out who the last two are. After all, this is Canadian Idol. Would the show really be sticking to its roots if Mookie Morris was the chosen one?

The night threw us a twist when host Ben Mulroney's "Canadian rock legend" Bryan Adams was the first performer. It was a nice change from the tiresome contestant medley we've become accustomed to each week. The Canadian version of Jon Bon Jovi sang "18 Til I Die" and "She's Got A Way." Considering what we're used to seeing on that stage, the performances were refreshing.

Last week, the three remaining contenders each returned to their respective hometowns for some ego-inflating and a home-cooked meal. After Adams was through, we were shown clips of the guys' trips back home. The excursions weren't all that thrilling, but it was pretty depressing to realize that Tams can draw a larger crowd than many more established artists.

Before the loser's name was announced, Mulroney asked the judges to offer words of wisdom for the intense final week. Zack Werner told the contestants to spend the remaining week enjoying the gift of the show as a whole. I think he was just at a loss for words and said whatever first came to mind. Sass Jordan offered advice to her prey by offering her personal assistance if they need a hand.

Then, nice and easy, Mulroney crushed Wright's Idol dream. There wasn't much reaction after his name was read out. I think at this point no one is really loyal to one contestant over the other. I think a true fan base was lost with Morris' dismissal.

I struggled with the realization that Canada somehow wound up thinking that MacDonald's voice is one of the best this country has to offer. I refuse to believe that's true.

The final two will now fly to New York City to spend time with R&B singer John Legend before they compete head-to-head for the Canadian Idol title on Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Each contestant will sing a song of their own choice, one picked by the judges and (shudder) the new Canadian Idol winner's single. For Tams, it will be "Sing." "Where We Begin" will be the single if MacDonald wins.

Results will be announced on Sept. 10's two-hour final show, which will also feature performances by Mariah Carey and Legend.
