Ed Robertson Survives Plane Crash

A small float-plane piloted by Barenaked Ladies singer/guitarist Ed Robertson crashed in a forest north of Bancroft, Ont. on Sunday afternoon, but all four people aboard walked away without injuries.

Robertson's Cessna 206 was taking off from Baptiste Lake when it lost air speed and crashed in a wooded area to the west. The plane was demolished, but Robertson, his wife Natalie, and friends Julie and Jeff Jones escaped through a window and walked out of the woods to report the accident, which is being investigated by Canada's Transportation Safety Board.

The plane clipped some maple trees on its way down, which seemed to cushion the impact, and it ended up on its nose while leaning against trees. Fuel leaked from the craft, which made getting away from it important in case it ignited.

Robertson received his pilot's licence in 2005. He hosts an Outdoor Life Network Canada series called Ed's Up, where he flies around North America and tries his hand at various jobs. He has a cottage in the area where the crash occurred.

Meanwhile, Robertson's BNL bandmate, singer/guitarist Steven Page, had his court appearance for a drug charge in Fayetteville, N.Y. delayed until Oct. 14. Page, 38, was arrested last month for criminal possession of a controlled substance. The felony charge carries a prison sentence of up to five-and-a-half years in state prison if he's convicted. While police say Page admitted to snorting cocaine at his girlfriend's apartment when he was arrested, he has pleaded not guilty.
