Rich Terfry, better known to music fans as Buck 65, will host CBC Radio 2's new afternoon show starting on Sept. 2.
The innovative artist will host Radio 2 Drive each weekday from 3 to 6 p.m. The show will feature 75 per cent Canadian content from a range of contemporary musical genres, and will focus on singer/songwriters. Terfry will occasionally be joined in the studio by other artists for interviews and performances.
Terfry said last summer that he's given up on making money from album sales and was looking for a job "that would offer me a half decent wage and a little flexibility, so that I can get away for a few weeks out of the year." The CBC gig seems to do that.
Terfry posted his feelings about his new job on his website, and said he "labored over the decision for many days and sleepless nights" before succumbing to the lure of a salary and full benefits for himself and his girlfriend. Terfry hosted a campus radio show for 11 years and, while he admits to being nervous, he'll use that experience in his new position.
"I'll be playing music and telling stories! My two favorite things! I'm sure I'll have the chance to be exposed to and educated by lots and lots of new music and musicians from all over the world everyday. This job promises to allow me to grow a lot."
As for how it will affect his music career, he wrote: "I can't help but think that the knowledge that I have a certain measure of security in my life (that I've never had before — ever), will create shift in my overall state of mind that will reflect positively on my work."
Another prominent artist, singer Molly Johnson, will host Radio 2 Morning from 6 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 6 to 8 a.m. on Sundays. Her show will also feature a mix of contemporary genres and artists.
