Boys Like Girls Completing Tour

Athough Boys Like Girls are headlining sold-out shows across North America, they're still very new faces in the music industry. Luckily for them, they've toured with some seasoned pop-punk acts who can give them some solid advice. They can thank Mother Nature for helping them become friends with current tourmates Good Charlotte, according to guitarist Paul DiGiovanni.

"We did a few shows over the holidays, and then we got stuck in some crazy storms together. We were both playing the same show the next night, so we had to charter our own plane. It sounds really cool, but it was a little tiny six-seater plane. We had to put tons of gear on and they almost wouldn't let us because of the weight restriction. We were like, 'We have to make it.' Our old guitar tech had to sit in the toilet the whole flight because there were no more seats left.

"We became really close and were like, 'You know what, what are you guys doing this summer?' We found out that we had a headline tour and they had nothing and wanted to tour the States, so we kept talking over the past few months, and it happened."

Crazy tours are nothing new to Boys Like Girls. The band — completed by singer Martin Johnson, drummer John Keefe and bassist Bryan Donahue — have been touring nearly non-stop since before the 2006 release of their self-titled record. DiGiovanni is pretty sure this is their last tour before they head back into the studio.

"Over the past year, we have been writing a ton and we have about 30 demos recorded. We are kind of going to take things one thing at a time, but after this tour we are going to get into the studio and do a bunch of pre-production and get the album going.

"The new stuff is obviously going to be different. That [self-titled album] was written at a different time in our lives. We were younger and it was about other experiences. We never set out to do a certain thing or sound like a certain thing, so we are probably going to do the same thing we did on the last album. Whatever comes out and whatever we like, we will probably just go with that."

Though this may be Boys Like Girls' last headlining tour for a while, they're in no way sick of life on the road yet. DiGiovanni says it feels like home to them, and they've learned to grow in the back of their van.

"At first, we were four kids having fun. This is our job and our hobby. We were just kind of going crazy, partying all of the time and all that. As time's gone by, we've kind of got more of a routine. We have other things that fill our time. Obviously, we love it, but it's more our job now and we do other things. We've toned down the partying and we are on a pretty good schedule now. We've definitely matured a lot in the past few years."

You can catch Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte on Aug. 13 at Toronto's Kool Haus and the next night at Montreal's Metropolis.
