Gym Class Heroes have a new album coming out in September. We'll have to wait and see if lead singer Travis McCoy will be free to promote it.
The frontman was arrested for third-degree assault in St. Louis on Tuesday night after hitting an audience member on the head with a microphone.
The Geneva, N.Y. band concluded "Peace Sign" (which turned out to be ironic) to open its Warped Tour set when an audience member near the stage allegedly called McCoy a "fucking ignorant nigger." The singer asked the man to repeat himself and then, as the instigator was being led away by security guards, he struck him with his microphone.
"I'm sorry," McCoy said immediately afterward, according to a RollingStone.com report. "But when someone calls you something that ignorant and that offensive, you have to bash their head in with a microphone."
The crowd apparently cheered as the unnamed victim was taken away, but McCoy was arrested at the end of his set. He was released from custody early on Wednesday morning on a $500 U.S. bond.
Gym Class Heroes drummer Matt McGinley was arrested in Mexico last year and held overnight on suspicion of breaking and entering when he drunkenly made himself at home in someone's condominium.
We don't know what kind of mischief Gym Class Heroes got up to when making their third album, but we can tell you that it's called The Quilt and will be released on Sept. 9 by Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen. Lead single "Cookie Jar" was produced by The-Dream (Rihanna, Usher) and will be available to buy online on July 8.
The Quilt features a number of prominent guest contributors, including Busta Rhymes, Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump, British singer Estelle and Daryl Hall. John Oates must have been too busy with J-Stache, the proposed animated series about the moustache worn by the swarthy half of Hall & Oates, to take part.
Canadians can see Gym Class Heroes on these Warped Tour dates:
July 19 Mississauga, ON @ The Flats at Arrow Hall
July 20 Montreal, QC @ Parc Jean Drapeau
Aug. 5 Saskatoon, SK @ Credit Union Centre
Aug. 6 Calgary, AB @ Race City Speedway
