Broken Social Scene Presents Brendan Canning's Solo Debut

Brendan Canning

Broken Social Scene co-founder Brendan Canning will release his debut solo album, Something For All Of Us…, on July 22 through Arts & Crafts.

It's the second volume in the Broken Social Scene Presents series which the other BSS co-founder, Kevin Drew, began last year with his Spirit If… album. Something For All Of Us… was produced in Toronto by Canning, Ryan Kondrat and John Lamagna. It features a slew of guests, including Scene members Drew, Justin Peroff, Jason Collett, Amy Millan, Andrew Whiteman, Ohad Benchetrit and Lisa Lobsinger. Barenaked Ladies keyboardist Kevin Hearn, Land Of Talk vocalist/guitarist Liz Powell, Metric guitarist James Shaw and The Stills keyboardist Liam O'Neil also contributed to the cause.

"This record, for me, is not a huge departure from what we do as BSS," says Canning. "It's a natural progression, really, and these songs will certainly be a part of the live performances to come, as Broken Social Scene."

"Hit The Wall" can be downloaded on Canning's website.

Canning was a member of hHead in the early '90s and has also performed and recorded with Spookey Reuben, Len and By Divine Right, among others. He contributed music to films The Tracey Fragments, Half Nelson and The Time Traveler's Wife. Director Bruce McDonald is making a documentary about Canning.

Canadian fans can hear material from Canning's album when Broken Social Scene play Calgary's Sled Island Festival on June 27 and Montreal's Osheaga Music & Arts Festival on Aug. 4.
