Blue Rodeo Rock Too Hard For Charlottetown

Blue Rodeo

Blue Rodeo's Juno Award wins for best group and adult alternative album earlier this month showed that they still have a lot of respect in the music community, and their impressive history and nurturing of younger bands sort of make them the kind old uncles of Canadian rock. So it was surprising to learn that they're too loud for Charlottetown.

That's right. Blue Rodeo rocked too hard for employees of the Confederation Centre Of The Arts, who complained that the volume levels of a recent concert were too high and might have damaged their hearing. Some staff members apparently wore ear plugs for the show, and others were allowed to take breaks from the Blue Rodeo onslaught.

"If you have a rock show coming in… then obviously we want to have hearing protection available for people," the centre's chief operating officer, Mike Cochrane, told CBC News.

The venue is pondering putting up signs to warn people about potential high volume danger for future shows. Other theatres in the region apparently have rules about canceling concerts that become too loud.

Although the Confederation Centre Of The Arts doesn't monitor decibel levels, the East Coast Music Association has a written policy that limits them for concerts. If bands don't conform, actions are taken to reduce the volume.
