Buck 65 Goes Wild On Hip-Hop Chart

Hold On Now, Youngster...

Every so often, something special happens on one of the six charts we generate from Canadian campus radio airplay. This week, Charty Chart Chat turns its attention to the Hip-Hop top 10. For only the second time since weekly specialty charts began being compiled in May 2002, an album has racked up 20 weeks on a specific chart. This week Buck 65's Situation matched Dimmu Borgir's Death Cult Armageddon, which lasted 20 weeks on the Metal/Punk chart from Sept. 19, 2003 to Feb. 27, 2004. During those 20 weeks on the Hip-Hop chart, Buck 65 also set a record for number of weeks at #1 with 12.

While we're focused on the specialty charts, let's reveal the five #1s. Crystal Castles' self-titled release remains at #1 on the Electronic chart, Cadence Weapon's Afterparty Babies holds down the top spot on Hip-Hop, and Meshuggah's Obzen remains at #1 on Metal/Punk. After a week's absence, the Umalali: Garifuna Women's Project compilation recaptures the top spot on the World/Folk chart. The wheel of fortune continues to spin wildly on the Jazz/Blues chart, as yet another album comes from nowhere to capture the #1 spot. This time it's Gerry Hebert's The Beat Niq Sessions.

Some radio stations only publish bi-weekly charts and it has been the practice of the ChartAttack charts staff to use a general music chart (compiled for the top 50 chart) for two consecutive weeks before dropping it if a new one hasn't been submitted. This week, only one of the 40 contributing stations didn't send in a new chart: CHUO (Ottawa). The impact of so many fresh charts was minimal, however, as the top four albums from last week remain in the same positions this week.

Crystal Castles' self-titled debut remains at #1, followed by Black Mountain's In The Future at #2, Plants And Animals' Parc Avenue at #3 and Ladyhawk's Shots at #4. Born Ruffians' Red, Yellow And Blue moves up a spot to #5, while Destroyer's Trouble In Dreams does the same at #6. The Raveonettes' Lust Lust Lust improves by four positions to #7, Cadence Weapon's Afterparty Babies jumps two places to #8 and Forest City Lovers' Haunting Moon Sinking rises six positions to #9. Vampire Weekend's self-titled release tumbles five spots to #10.

The Chart Sizzler Award goes to another Arts & Crafts release, as the top debut this week belongs to Los Campesinos!' #14 entry, Hold On Now, Youngster.... They're the first non-Canadian band on the label to grab this honour. The curious Volume One album featuring M. Ward and Almost Famous and Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy actress Zooey Deschanel, released under the moniker She & Him, enters at #23. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! enters at #25, while Pas Chic Chic's Au Contraire enters at #32 and Sarah Slean's The Baroness arrives at #33. Other interesting albums debuting this week include Fuck Buttons' Street Horrrsing at #43, Simply Saucer's Half Human, Half Live at #49 and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks' Real Emotional Trash at #50.
