White Stripes Sued By Former Quebec Radio Host

The White Stripes suddenly find themselves in hot water over a sample they used on their eight-year-old De Stijl album.
"Jumble, Jumble" allegedly uses a 10-second clip taken from a Radio-Canada call-in show hosted by Dominique Payette, where she's talking to an unidentified girl in French about something that the girl experienced for the first time. Payette claims the dynamic duo never obtained permission to use the clip and violated her privacy under Quebec law, so she's suing the band, Third Man Records and BMG Music Publishing Canada for $70,000 and requesting that all copies of De Stijl be removed from stores.
"They use the child's voice in a very cavalier way," Payette said in a Radio-Canada interview. "I have two choices: Either you go to court or you do nothing. I decided to do something."
But it still took Payette, who's now a lecturer at Quebec City's Laval University, almost a year to do something. She said she first heard the song in question last March. You can hear the sample for yourself here.
