Sub Pop — the label of such dreamy music darlings as The Shins, The Postal Service, Iron & Wine and Band Of Horses — hope to add some needed sunshine to Seattle with Grand Archives' almost self-titled debut album on Feb. 19.
The '60s pop and country-rock-influenced quintet formerly named Archives are composed of former Band Of Horses and Carissa's Weird member Mat Brooke (vocals, guitar), Curtis Hall (drums), Jeff Montano (bass), Ron Lewis (guitar, keyboards) and Thomas Wright (guitar).
The follow-up to last May's self-released EP was produced by Ben Kersten and recorded in three locations last year. The Grand Archives, which will be released on CD and vinyl, features trombone and flugelhorn and uses violin bows on guitars and utilizes a cello as a bass. "Miniature Birds" and "A Setting Sun" can be heard on the group's MySpace page, but you'll have to wait for the album to see how well they know their Manitoba history with "Louis Riel."
The band's second show was opening for Modest Mouse at Seattle's Paramount Theater last April, and it's been a whirlwind since then. They've toured with math rock band Minus The Bear, played the Bumbershoot festival in September and have a few U.S. dates scheduled for February and March.
Here are the tracks on The Grand Archives:
"Torn Blue Foam Couch"
"Miniature Birds"
"Swan Matches"
"Index Moon"
"George Kaminski"
"A Setting Sun"
"Breezy No Breezy"
"Sleepdriving"
"Louis Riel"
"The Crime Window"
"Orange Juice"
