Despite having just come off the road in support of Zeitgeist, but with shows already lined up for early 2008, the Smashing Pumpkins are in the studio creating new songs that could possibly precede the tour dates.

Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's recent blog entry on the band's website revealed the news while thanking fans for their best wishes following problems with a partially blocked artery that resulted in some concerts being postponed.

"The tour was a rock rampage and now we are back in the studio recording some songs for a possible release worldwide," he said. "Look for these around the first of the year. Busy bees!"

There's no word on whether the songs will be part of a full-length album or EP, or whether they'll be released digitally or in some physical format. No song titles have been announced.

The Smashing Pumpkins are already slated to mount a European arena tour beginning in late January in Serbia before heading to Australia to headline four shows for the country's second annual Virgin Festival in early April. The group headlined the Toronto version of the Virgin Festival in September.
