Deerhunter To Take Break While Cox Focuses On Atlas Sound

Deerhunter

Atlanta indie rockers Deerhunter will go on hiatus following a Dec. 8 show in Barcelona, Spain, allowing frontman Bradford Cox time to promote the debut album from his Atlas Sound solo project.

Cox broke the news on the band's blog, citing time needed to organize the group members' lives as reason for the break — not break-up. He says Deerhunter's career thus far has been a "hallucination," as they never imagined playing outside of Atlanta when they started, but explains that, "We are all exhausted now and ready to be home." Cox wrote that the band's blog will be updated sporadically, but will mostly be about side projects as "deerhunter is sleeping now."

Atlas Sound was named after a karaoke cassette recorder that Cox used in grade six, and the Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel debut will be released on Feb. 19 by Kranky. The 14-track disc was performed entirely by Cox, with recording guidance from Brian Foote from Kranky labelmate Nudge.

Cox says the album is for his best friend and Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt, and has a lot to do with Cox's childhood. Tracks from the album can be previewed on Cox's MySpace page. A tour is planned following the record's release.
