It's been beyond a good week to be a fan of the progenitors of shoegaze. Hot on the heels of the Swervedriver reunion announcement, My Bloody Valentine have emerged from the doldrums of a 14 year hiatus and have reformed!
MBV mainman Kevin Shields says the band have regrouped like a Voltron of white noise awesomeness. According to Shields, he, drummer Colm O'Ciosoig and guitarist vocalist Bilinda Butcher have a new studio album in the works. The disc is a compendium of work from the years immediately preceding and following the dissolution of the band.
"I pretty much know what the one that's going to come out this year is going to sound like because its already pretty much three-quarters done already," said Shields via VBS.tv. "It sounds like what we sounded like — different, but not radically different. People will go, 'yeah, it sounds like My Bloody Valentine.'"
Shields and his bandmates have remained active in music since MBV's unfortunate disbandment in the mid-'90s. O'Ciosoig has worked with Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star in the group Hope Sandoval And The Warm Inventions. More recently, he can be heard lending his considerable talents to Film School's latest offering, Hideout, while Shields has produced various acts and serves as touring guitarist for Primal Scream.
The singer/songwriter was also heavily involved in the soundtrack for Sophia Coppola's 2003 film Lost In Translation. That project earned him a BAFTA nomination for his typically gauzy guitar compositions.
There has been no word yet on a tour or an official release date for the as-yet-unfinished record. To celebrate, ChartAttack suggests you put on the band's opus, 1991's Loveless.
