Avril's Ubiquity Acknowledged At 2007 World Music Awards

The 2007 World Music Awards brought Canada some musical recognition Sunday night from Monte Carlo.
Even with Mika and Akon taking the bulk of trophies, heading home four and three awards respectively, Canadian artists left their mark.
French Canada's favourite celebrity, Celine Dion, nabbed the night's highest honour, the legend award for outstanding contribution to music.
Dion performed "Taking Chances" off her upcoming album with the same name.
Canada's punk princess and November '07 Flare magazine cover star Avril Lavigne walked away with world's best-selling pop/rock female artist and canada's best-selling artist awards.
Lavigne performed at the awards. Her husband Deryck Whibley and his band Sum 41 didn't, presumably due to his tour-crippling back injury.
British pop star Mika scored male entertainer of the year, the world's best-selling new artist, the world's best-selling pop/rock male artist and Britain's best-selling artist awards.
Mika was scheduled to perform his hit "Grace Kelly," which makes reference to Prince Albert of Monaco's mother. Due to laryngitis, the performance was cancelled.
Akon's three awards honoured him with r&b artist award, africa's best-selling artist and the world's best-selling internet artist.
Patti Labelle was also paid tribute for her career.
The annual awards show is estimated to reach a worldwide audience of one billion viewers in over 160 countries.
