New Pornographers Hold Off The Sadies

Pica Electric Armada

Down in the Big Apple, New York baseball fans are licking their wounds as the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies are about to start the World Series while the members of the Mets and Yankees sit at home. On the other hand, New Yorkers can take solace that campus radio's biggest music festival still calls NYC home. The CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival took place last week, and many Canadian campus radio music directors who attended didn't contribute charts last week. So there wasn't the usual volatility found on the six different radio charts this week.

The New Pornographers' Challengers holds on to #1 again and is followed by The Sadies' New Seasons, which surprisingly jumped four spots to #2. Weakerthans' Reunion Tour remains at #3, while Stars' In Our Bedroom After The War dropped two places to #4. Caribou's Andorra stays at #5, We Are Wolves' Total Magique drops two spots to #6, and The Acorn's Glory Hope Mountain remains at #7. Iron & Wine's The Shepherd's Dog jumped nine spots to #8, Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam rose three notches to #9 and Sandro Perri's Tiny Mirrors jumped up a position to round out the top 10.

There wer a trio of big movers on the chart this week. The Most Serene Republic's Population rocketed up 33 places to #13, while Liars' self-titled album registered a 19-spot jump to #31. Hrsta's Ghosts Will Come And Kiss Our Eyes rose 15 increments to #20.

The Chart Sizzler Award goes to an album that was originally released last spring. Coming in at #28 is The 6ixty 8ights' Pica Electric Armada, which garnered modest airplay and chart placements across the country, including #8 on CIUT (Toronto), #14 on CHOQ (Quebec-Montreal), #15 on CIBL and #17 on CHRY (York). The runner-up debut was Sunset Rubdown's Random Spirit Lover at #32, followed by The Details' Draw A Distance. Draw A Border at #37.

Four of the five top 10 specialty charts have the same #1 album as last week, while the fifth features a former #1 returning to the top spot. Calvin Harris' I Created Disco holds on to #1 on the Electronic chart and Konono No. 1's Live At Couleur Cafe is locked in at #1 on the World/Folk top 10. High On Fire's Death Is The Communion remains #1 on the Metal/Punk chart while Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass has owned #1 on the Hip-Hop chart for six straight weeks. Carol McCartney's A Night In Tunisia returns to the #1 position on the Jazz/Blues chart after a three-week absence.
