New Pornographers See Stars Below Them

It looks as if The New Pornographers may still be destined to dominate the top 50 chart. They're doing it right now and may continue for a couple of more weeks, as some of their stiffest competition withers farther down. The New Pornographers' Challengers remains at #1 for the week ending Oct. 12.
Stars' In Our Bedroom After The War jumps a spot to #2, switching places with Weakerthans' Reunion Tour. Remaining in the same spot from last week are We Are Wolves' Total Magique at #4 and Caribou's Andorra at #5. The Sadies' New Seasons leaps four places to #6, and The Acorn's Glory Hope Mountain rises six spots to #7. M.I.A.'s Kala nudges up a notch to #8, and Kevin Drew's Spirit If... at #9 and DD/MM/YYYY's Are They Masks? at #10 both drop two slots.
The Chart Sizzler Award goes to the floppy-hatted Basia Bulat, as Oh My Darling enters the chart at #27 on the strength of airplay from five campus radio stations, including a #1 spot at CFRU (Guelph) and a #3 placing at CJAM (Windsor). Oh My Darling just beat out Mum's Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy at #28, followed by Black Francis' Bluefinger at #34 and Bionic's Black Blood at #41.
With all of the new albums being released by your favourite indie bands, long-standing records on the top 50 chart are few and far between. In fact, the longest is Okkervil River's The Stage Names at #42, which has only survived for 10 weeks. This is the first week that only one album is in double-digit territory. The Doers' Gaiety at #31 follows with nine weeks, while Stars, Caribou and Girl Nobody's Balaclava Casino Heist at #30 have hung around for eight weeks.
William Parker's Corn Meal Dance remains at #1 on the Jazz/Blues chart for a second week, while Konono No. 1's Live At Couleur Cafe holds its #1 position on the World/Folk chart for a third straight week. Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass has remained at #1 on the Hip-Hop chart for all five weeks that it's been on this top ten. Returning to #1 on Metal/Punk is High On Fire's Death Is The Communion, which held that honour two weeks ago. The only totally new #1 is Calvin Harris' I Created Disco, which jumps two places to grab top spot on the Electronic chart.
