New Releases: Kevin Drew Brings Social Scene Along For The Ride

Kevin Drew hasn't decided that he's too big for Broken Social Scene. Sure, Spirit If... and has his name at the top, but it also says "Broken Social Scene Presents," and there's nothing ambiguous about that. In fact, pretty much everyone in BSS appears on the album, which also features guest appearances from J. Mascis, Spiral StairsTom Cochrane. And, no, the last name is not a misprint. Tom fucking Cochrane. It's in stores Tuesday.
Also out this week is the latest from The Donnas. The quartet had a strong start in the industry, conquering major labels, supporting huge arena acts and, well, looking pretty cute. But now they're sort of starting from scratch on their own label, Purple Feather Records. It's doubtful, however, that they're really going back to basics with Bitchin', which is out this week. I mean, it's called Bitchin', so there's a good chance it'll have rock riffs and loud vocals. And that's what The Donnas have always been about.
Pearl Jam fans don't have a new album or cross-Canada tour to look forward to this year, but Eddie Vedder's been busy soundtracking movies, a couple of which premiered at last week's Toronto International Film Festival with the singer in attendance. The soundtrack to one of those, the Sean Penn-directed Into The Wild, will be available to his legions of fans on Tuesday.
Speaking of big followings, James Blunt has one, for reasons unknown. Whether he can remain a mainstream success or not will be decided with this week's release of All The Lost Souls. But looking at the sorrowful title, here's some food for thought: He dates models and has berjillions of dollars. Lost soul? Mmm, we'll let you judge for yourself on that one.
