Klaxons Win Mercury, Winehouse Shows Up

There are surprises and then there are surprises. Even the Klaxons were shocked when it was announced in London, England, Tuesday night that they were the winners of Britain's Mercury Music Prize.
"It was the worst two hours of our sitting there not knowing if we'd won," Jamie Reynolds said after the stunned group took the stage to accept the award, which came with a 20,000 pound cash prize. "It means so much."
Klaxons' Myths Of The Near Future was considered a bit of a long shot behind the two initial frontrunners, Arctic Monkeys' Favourite Worst Nightmare and Amy Winehouse's Back To Black.
The other big surprise was the appearance of the latter artist. Winehouse showed up to sing "Love Is A Losing Game." After she finished, she kissed her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, and sat down at her table with her family.
NME.com reports that she looked sober and healthy following a tumultuous few weeks, during when she has gone to rehab, fled rehab, fought with her husband and relaxed with him on vacation.
The NME also says organizers didn't know until the last minute whether Winehouse would show up until she arrived at Grosvenor House Hote to soundcheck at about 5 p.m.
Winehouse was scheduled to be in North America this weekend, where she was to appear at Toronto's Virgin Festival on Saturday and the MTV Video Awards on Sunday, but all of her North American dates were postponed after she suffered health problems in mid-August.
Nominees Dizzee Rascal and Jamie T also performed at the show. The Canadian award inspired by the Mercury, the Polaris Music Prize, will be handed out on Sept. 24 at the Phoenix in Toronto.
