Canadian Idol Update: D-Day For D'Eon

Dwight D'Eon

Even babies were clapping for Paul Anka on Tuesday night's results episode of Canadian Idol. The same can't be said for Dwight D'Eon, the 28-year-old Nova Scotia lobster fisherman who became the latest Idol hopeful to bid adieu.

Kicking off "salute to the standards week" on Monday evening, D'Eon offered a regrettable performance of Nat King Cole's classic "Unforgettable" that left the guy who judge Zack Werner once called a "balls-to-the-wall Canadian rocker" as the odd man out.

Tuesday's show began with the final four contestants taking turns singing the Anka anthem and former #1 hit "Diana," while celebrities Pamela Wallin and Erica Ehm looked on in the John Bassett Theatre at Toronto's Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

As a parting compliment, judge Farley Flex told D'Eon that he always squeezed every ounce out of his opportunity as a musician and that he should bottle that, go forth and multiply.

Please don't. We need another D'Eon as much as we need more of Joan Rivers.

D'Eon's elimination wasn't a big surprise, since he was in the bottom two last week.

Anka's charged version of "My Way," backed by a 20-piece big band, received two standing ovations. It was good, but the fact that host Ben Mulroney told the crowd before the show began to go "butt-wild" might have had something to do with it. Personally, hearing Mulroney utter the phrase "butt-wild" scared me.

D'Eon left the masses in the theatre with his own nod to Frank Sinatra by singing "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and thanking his fans for the "time of his life."

Next week: The final three sing what the judges and fans want to hear in the "People's Choice" show and — I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it — former Idol winner Kalan Porter performs.
