Tom Cochrane Joins Broken Social Scene's Extended Family

Kevin Drew

Kevin Drew's forthcoming Spirit If... album features familiar names from Broken Social Scene, some respected members of the indie rock hierarchy and the man for whom life is a highway, Tom Cochrane.

Drew is joined on the record, due on Sept. 18 via Arts & Crafts, by Cochrane, Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, Pavement's Scott Kannberg, Metric's Joules Scott-Key, The American Analog Set's Andrew Kenny, Gonzales and Do Make Say Think's Ohad Benchechrit and Charles Spearin.

Since the record is the first in the Broken Social Scene Presents series, there are contributions from the group's Justin Peroff, Feist, Brendan Canning, Amy Millan, Jason Tait, Julie Penner, Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, Evan Cranley, Andrew Whiteman, David Newfeld, Bill Priddle, Jason Collett and David Mitchell.

Spirit If... will be available as a digital download, on CD and as a two-LP vinyl set. Drew's MySpace page features "Tbtf," "Backed Out On The..." and an exclusive B-side titled "Cocaine Skin."

"Backed Out On The..." was recorded with Key on drums and Drew and Mascis on guitar and vocals. Its video, which is also on Drew's MySpace page, was shot at the last minute following Dinosaur Jr.'s show in Toronto in June and features Mascis and bandmates Lou Barlow and Murph as well as Kids On TV's John Caffery. According to the site, the shoot involved "seven mirrors, one disco ball, four lights, one bottle of rum, three bottles of tequila, 62 beers, four crew and 17 people.

"It got put together on the day of the shoot and became the party of the year. It cost three thousand dollars to make... It was priceless."
