Canadian Idol Update: Enrique Iglesias Heats Things Up

Canadian Idol guest mentor Enrique Iglesias

Tuesday night's elimination episode of Canadian Idol culminated in 16-year-old Martha Joy's tearful curtain call.

The group number was shockingly low on both Cancon and cheese factor, as the remaining eight contestants sang 10,000 Maniacs' "These Are Days." Greg Neufeld and Dwight D'Eon played guitar, Tara Oram played tambourine and Brian Melo played a shaker thing. I don't know, shaker things aren't very rock 'n' roll, are they? He may as well have played the triangle. At least triangles have street cred.

Enrique Iglesias and his three-mile-long eyelashes took the stage. Ay ay ay! En-ri-que! Muy caliente! I've never been a fan, but now I'm pretty much fan club president. Holy hotnessness! Iglesias sang his latest single, "Somebody's Me," and did a lot of crazy emoting with his hands. I can think of some better things he could be doing with those hands.

Iglesias then riled the crowd up with his huge hit, "Be With You." He proceeded to peel off his shirt (unfortunately, there was another one underneath it) and ran around the studio, giving we pathetic commoners a whiff of celebrity. If you're interested, celebrity smells like Ivory soap, expensive cologne and musky manliness.

After a Pantene makeover segment (during which the stylist added some product to Matt Rapley's luxurious mane), it was elimination time.

Unsurprisingly, Rapley and Joy were announced as the two lowest vote-getters. Rapley smiled good-naturedly as host Ben Mulroney threw to a commercial break. He was likely secure in the knowledge that Canadian Idol voters are generally 13-year-old girls, and they'd rather send ladies home than cutie-pie boys.

Joy was unable to sing herself out with "True Colors," as she broke down completely. It was a genuinely moving moment that looked like the last day of summer camp with tears, swaying, sing-alongs, group hugs and S'mores.
