Lindsay Lohan managed to stay clean for 11 days after leaving a rehabilitation clinic before apparently falling under the spell of booze and cocaine and being arrested again early on Tuesday morning.

Santa Monica, Calif. police spokesman Lt. Alex Padilla told People magazine that police responded to a call of two sports utility vehicles chasing each other. The pursuing SUV was stopped and Lohan was discovered to be behind the wheel. The actress/singer — who was booked for driving under the influence (DUI) and hit and run last week in connection with a May car accident that prompted her to enter the Promises treatment centre for six weeks — didn't own the 2004 Yukon she was driving.

Lohan failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. She was taken to the police station and a search allegedly revealed a "small" amount of cocaine in her pocket. Two breathalyzer tests were administered, and the 21 year old's blood-alcohol levels were found to be .12 and .13 per cent, above the legal limit of .08 per cent.

She was charged with DUI, cocaine possession, transporting a narcotic into a custody facility and driving on a suspended licence. She also took a urine test and may face an additional charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance if it's determined that she had cocaine in her system.

Lohan, who was wearing an alcohol-detection ankle bracelet as part of her post-clinic addiction treatment, posted $25,000 U.S. bail and was released from jail around 6:30 a.m.

Padilla told People that the 2007 Escalade that Lohan was chasing was driven by the mother of her personal assistant, who had apparently just quit.

Lohan's lawyer, Blair Berk, released this statement about his client and her situation: "Addiction is a terrible and vicious disease. Since Lindsay transitioned to outpatient care, she has been monitored on a SCRAM bracelet and tested daily in order to support her sobriety. Throughout this period, I have received timely and accurate reports from the testing companies. Unfortunately, late yesterday I was informed that Lindsay had relapsed. The bracelet has now been removed. She is safe, out of custody and presently receiving medical care."
