JAMC, MBV And Other Pioneers Featured In Shoegazer Documentary

Jesus And Mary Chain

The '80s shoegazer movement is being chronicled in a documentary by first-time feature director Eric Green titled Beautiful Noise.

The Los Angeles-based Green has completed 47 interviews for the film, which is in the editing stage and has no firm release date. A few more interviews may be added to round things out.

The film will examine the impact that the primarily British groups, who utilized heavy distortion on their guitars to create some groundbreaking rock music, had both during the genre's salad days and beyond through their influence on others who came after them.

Among those who were part of the original scene and were interviewed for the documentary are: My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields and Debbie Googe; Jesus And Mary Chain's William Reid, Jim Reid and Douglas Hart; Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde; The Cure's Robert Smith; Slowdive's Neil Halstead; Ride's Mark Gardner and Andy Bell; Lush's Emma Anderson; Swervedriver's Adam Franklin; Curve's Toni Halliday; Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie; Flying Saucer Attack's David Pearce; Pale Saints' Ian Masters; The Boo Radleys' Martin Carr; producer Alan Moulder; and Creation Records founder Alan McGee.

Others weighing in with their thoughts include Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and members of Asobi Seksu, Serena-Maneesh, Ladytron and Autolux.
