Kelly Clarkson Cancels Summer Tour

Disappointing ticket sales have caused former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson and concert promoter LiveNation to cancel all 35 dates of her upcoming arena tour.

"Ticket sales have not been what we anticipated and we came to the realization that we had bit off more than we could chew," said a statement from LiveNation CEO Mike Rapino. "In the end, we are in the Kelly Clarkson business and for that reason we believe that this decision will only benefit her and her fans in the long run."

Clarkson broke the news to fans via this message on her website: "I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to getting out there to perform for y'all. In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won't be coming out to tour this summer. The fact is that touring is just too much too soon.

"But I promise you that we're going to get back out there as soon as is humanly possible to give you a show that will be even better.

"Thanks for all of your love and continued support."

The announcement comes just days after the singer fired her manager, Jeff Kwatinetz. Kwatinetz and RCA label head Clive Davis haven't supported the artistic direction of her forthcoming album, My December, after the multi-platinum success of 2004's Breakaway.

The Grammy Award-winning artist co-wrote and co-produced all the tracks on the June 26 release and she told Elle magazine that Davis allegedly offered her $10 million U.S. to trade five of her dark rock songs for more radio-friendly tracks. The response to the rock-oriented first single "Never Again" has been lukewarm in comparison to past hits.

Clarkson's summer tour was set to run from July 11 until Sept. 26. The dates are expected to be rescheduled for smaller, more intimate venues. Ticket holders will be refunded at the point of purchase and contacted for an exclusive pre-sale once new dates have been announced.

Clarkson hasn't cancelled her July 7 appearance at the Live Earth Concert at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

Here are the Canadian tour dates that have been cancelled:

Aug. 2 Toronto, ON @ Air Canada Centre
Sept. 13 Calgary, AB @ Pengrowth Saddledome
Sept. 14 Edmonton, AB @ Rexall Place
Sept. 16 Vancouver, BC @ Pacific Coliseum
