Moby Releases 60 Pieces Of Free Music For Filmmakers

Although Moby licensed every single song off his smash album Play some years ago, he's now going the other way by making roughly 60 pieces of music available for student and non-profit filmmakers to use.

"It's essentially a function that allows independent and non-profit filmmakers to download and use my music for free," Moby wrote in a May 8 post on his website. "We're starting with about 60 pieces of eclectic, unreleased, film music, but over time I'll continue to update it and add more music.

"I have a lot of friends in the independent film world, and their biggest complaint is that it's either expensive or onerous to license music for their films."

The length of the movie is irrelevant, and filmmakers only have to sign up to download the music for free. However, they should be student, independent or non-profit films.

"If you use the music in your film and your film goes on to make money: great, and congratulations," Moby wrote. "Before your film makes money, though, you'll have to apply for a commercial license for the music. I promise that the commercial licenses won't be expensive or difficult to obtain."

Any money garnered from the commercial licenses will be donated to charity.

Moby will play some DJ dates in Europe in May, June and July after doing a DJ set in Toronto last month. He also performed at a New York City fundraiser in late April with an as-yet unnamed rock band. They originally called themselves The Little Death until they found it was already in use, and they haven't revealed a replacement.
