Nova Scotia roots rocker Matt Mays will head into the studio shortly to start recording a new album with his band El Torpedo, but he'll have a revamped lineup.

"I regret to announce that singer, guitarist Jarrett Murphy has decided to leave El Torpedo," Mays wrote on the band's website on Tuesday. "His departure is on good terms, and we all support the decision he's made."We've had an incredible five years with Jarrett. He will be missed both on an off stage. He was a huge part of this band. His leaving will no doubt send this band in a new direction.

"Murphy was part of the Rockers hockey team at the recent Juno Cup game against former NHL players in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.Murphy has been replaced by Jay Smith from Cape Breton band Rock Ranger.

"The rock gods themselves could not create a better guy for the job," Mays wrote. "Jarrett has gladly passed the torch to Jay with confidence. We look forward to our future with Jay Smith.

"The group, who released their self-titled album in 2005, will start a three-week U.S. tour with Will Hoge and The Deadstring Brothers on April 25 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their lone scheduled Canadian date is June 24 in St. Adele, Quebec supporting Blue Rodeo
