Ryan Malcolm Moves Past Canadian Idol With Low Level Flight

Low Level Flight

Ryan Malcolm is putting his Canadian Idol victory and image in the past by fronting a new rock band and releasing a new album.

Malcolm formed Low Level Flight with bassist Shaun Noronha and guitarist/keyboardist James Rooke, while guitarist Dave Carter and drummer Brandon Merenick round out the live lineup. Their Urgency debut album was self-financed and will be released on March 27 via Malcolm's I Heart Records label, with marketing support from Angeline Entertainment and distribution from Fontana North.

It's been more than three years since the release of Malcolm's Home solo debut, which spawned the hit "Something More," and he's re-evaluated his career and realized that he wanted more control of it.

"After having been with a major (Sony BMG), I realized that success is not just in the numbers," he says. "It's about being happy with your artistic contributions."

Low Level Flight worked on their album with producer Mike Borkosky (IllScarlett) to create a sound that was somewhat Brit-inspired and more rock-oriented than his solo work, yet still pop enough not to alienate all of Malcolm's Idol fans. Lead single "Change For Me," about a guy finding out that his girlfriend has cheated on him with another woman, hit radio in early February.

A spring tour is in the works, but no dates have been confirmed as of yet.

Here are the tracks on Urgency:
"Change For Me"
"Hesitate"
"When Will I Learn"
"Hate You"
"Turnaround"
"Say"
"For A Second"
"Holiday"
"Save My Soul"
"All That I Need"
