Joe Strummer Doc To Hit Screens In May

Joe Strummer

It's been a little over a year since ChartAttack first mentioned Joe Strummer's biopic and now the film is finally ready for an official public release.

Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten is the latest rock 'n' roll documentary from director Julien Temple (Glastonbury and The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle), and it premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Unwritten pulls together a huge amount of never-before-seen footage of Strummer either working in the studio with The Clash or engaging in interviews. It also features live concert footage and tapes of Strummer's BBC radio program.

To uncover some of the myths behind The Clash frontman, Temple used clips of the punk rocker's childhood along with some vintage photos to give the documentary a personal touch.

Through the use of old recordings, the deceased Strummer narrates the film and it features intimate interviews with Martin Scorsese, Bono, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Clash bandmate Mick Jones. Apparently these interviews are done in a campfire setting as a homage to the late singer, since he was reportedly a huge fan of campfire celebrations.

The documentary is set to debut to U.K. audiences on May 18. The soundtrack will be available four days shy of its release and will include unreleased Clash material, along with tracks from Strummer's other bands The 101ers and The Mescaleros.

Strummer died in December 2002 of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. A short three months later The Clash were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
