The Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer and Fall Out Boy are some of the big-name acts who will perform at one of seven Live Earth — The Concert For A Climate In Crisis festivals to be held around the globe on July 7.
In a press conference on Thursday in Los Angeles, former U.S. vice-president Al Gore, actress Cameron Diaz and artist/producer Pharrell announced some of the musicians who will take part in the environmentally conscious concerts that will be broadcast around the world via television, radio and the internet. Exact venues have yet to be announced, but Shanghai, China, Johannesburg, South Africa, London, England, Sydney, Australia and undisclosed cities in Brazil, Japan and the U.S. will host the events.
Similar to 2005's Live 8 concerts, these new festivals will be used to try and raise awareness about the global climate crisis. They're part of the Save Our Selves (SOS) campaign, and organizers hope that they'll attract more than a million people to witness them live while aiming for more than two billion viewers through various media and online platforms.
Kevin Wall, who won an Emmy Award as the executive producer of the Live 8 concerts, will produce Live Earth. More than 25 performers have signed up so far, and more than 100 are expected to take part by the time everything is finalized. Proceeds from the concerts will help support Gore's Alliance For Climate Protection initiative. Tickets are expected to go on sale by mid-March.
