Pumpkins Corgan And Chamberlin Will Unleash Zeitgeist This Summer

Billy Corgan

Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin have been using their MySpace page to tease fans with occasional stream of consciousness updates on the new incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins, but were more succinct and less obtuse with this most recent post:

"The Smashing Pumpkins, 6th album, 'Zeitgeist,' 07.07.07."

That last number is widely feared by many as "the number of the suck."

July 7 is a Saturday, while almost all albums are released on Tuesdays in North America. Zeitgeist will be issued by Reprise, and a label spokesperson told Billboard.com that it will come out this summer, but wouldn't specify a particular day — so the Pumpkins may yet conform to industry standards.

While the new LP has largely been draped in mystery, it's now become apparent that Corgan and Chamberlin are the only original Pumpkins involved with it. They've been working on the follow-up to 2000's Machina/The Machines Of God with producers Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, Cheap Trick, Ozzy Osbourne) and Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera, Limp Bizkit).

Corgan, Chamberlin and whoever else they enlist will emerge from seclusion in June for four festival dates in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. No North American dates are scheduled at this point.
