Heather Mills McCartney To Act As Her Own Lawyer

Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations, friend to seals and anti-landmine activist Heather Mills now has a new shingle she can hang by her door — pseudo-lawyer.

Seemingly with an eye to her bankbook, the one Heather Mills McCartney, estranged wife to The Beatles' Paul McCartney, has taken to representing herself in minor court matters related to her pending divorce from the Fab Four member.

Mills recently represented herself in High Court last week, filing a motion "seeking an order for occupation of the matrimonial home." Translation: since they split, Mills hasn't been allowed back in their house and she wants access. She also wants a court order put in place to prevent McCartney from having access to her own Hove, East Sussex home.

A source quoted in a Daily Mail news story says the reason why Mills has joined the ranks of pettifoggers is because "she has to be careful about the size of the legal bills and by representing herself she is able to cut down the costs."

Speculation has been rampant as to the amount of McCash that Mills will get from McCartney in their divorce, though the numbers have ranged from a low of 20 million pounds ($45 million Cdn) to as much as 100-200 million pounds (225 to 450 million Cdn). Legal watchers figure Mills could spend up to one million pounds in fixer financing throughout the trial and has been facing legal bills of up to 15,000 pounds ($33,826 Cdn) per day, thus far.

Mills is currently retaining Anthony Julius, the same beagle who represented Princess Di in her split from Charles, along with Nicola Fletcher, a family law expert. Although Mills has been making the treks to court by herself, she's still receiving advice from her legal team.

About Mills, Anthony Julius recently told The Daily Telegraph, "I'm happy to represent her. I like her and I have a great deal of admiration for her. She's intrepid and stalwart... she also has a great deal of natural intelligence."
