Charty Chart Chat: Beck's Back At #1

Those The Brokes

After a week hiatus as the supreme ruler of the campus radio top 50 chart, Beck's The Information has taken over the top spot for the fifth week.

Beck is followed by the wiliest of wily veterans, a man who — like good wine or cheese — just keeps getting better with age: Tom Waits. His new three-CD set, Orphans, moves up four places to #2. Making one of the biggest jumps into the top 10 (without being a new entry) is Joanna Newsom's Ys, which rockets up 40 positions to #3. Shotgun And Jaybird's Trying To Get Somewhere remains at #4, while The Blow's Paper Television rises 20 places to reach #5. Stolen Minks' Family Boycott moves back to #6, a position it held two weeks ago. Last week's #1, The Decemberists' The Crane Wife, tumbles six spots to #7. The Dears' Gang Of Losers drops five spots to #8. A third album moving from the poorhouse to the penthouse is And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead's So Divided, which rises 28 places to grab #9. TV On The Radio's Return To Cookie Mountain continues its recent resurgence, moving up 19 places over the last two weeks (including seven this week) to re-enter the top 10 in the final spot.

The Chart Sizzler Award goes to The Magic Numbers' Those The Brokes, which arrives at #26. That beats out Swan Lake's Beast Moans, which debuts at #30. Swan Lake member Dan Bejar also leads Destroyer, and that band's reissue of We'll Build Them A Golden Bridge hits the chart at #35. Other notable new entries include The Melvins' (A) Senile Animal at #39, Converge's No Heroes at #47 and Jackie Mittoo's Wishbone at #50.

A few albums have survived on the chart for a long time and should be recognized for this accomplishment. At #48, Shout Out Out Out Out's Not Saying/Just Saying has logged 17 weeks. Chad VanGaalen's Skelliconnection, sitting at #29, has been around for 16 weeks. Hidden Cameras' Awoo, at #24, has survived 15 weeks.

Outside of the Electronic chart, which saw Junior Boys' So This Is Goodbye remain at #1, the other four specialty charts saw last week's #2 album move up a notch to capture the top spot. Lady Sovereign's Public Warning sits at #1 on the Hip-Hop top 10, Rudresh Mahanthappa's Codebook heads up the Jazz/Blues chart, Tartit's Abacabok takes over #1 on World/Folk, and Mastodon's Blood Mountain ascends to the top of the Metal/Punk chart.
