Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew Readies Solo Debut

Broken Social Scene aren't, as was exaggerated in some media earlier this year, breaking up for good. But they do, according to frontman Kevin Drew, intend to take a "significant" hiatus. That doesn't mean you won't be hearing from most of the group's members in the new year, however.
"I'm gonna release a solo record," Drew told ChartAttack earlier this week after returning home from Social Scene's final U.S. tour of 2006. "It's pretty much done."I'm just gonna decide when I feel like talking about myself again, which I don't right now. So I might wait a long time before I put it out. But that's gonna happen."
Late last year, Brendan Canning talked about putting out another BSS album this year with the material left over from the sessions for 2005's self-titled LP, which took nearly three years to record.
Drew doesn't anticipate any of that material seeing the light of day soon, and was quick to downplay the possibility that any of it would be released in 2007.
"Apostle Of Hustle has a new record coming out, Feist's record is done, Do Make [Say Think]'s record is done. Stars are starting to record. Everyone's getting in and getting ready for releasing a lot of records next year."
So as far as Social Scene is concerned, yeah, we have a bunch of stuff lying around. But we had a really good time, so I'd like to see a year where you don't really have to hear about us. Everybody else has a lot of good music coming out."
Drew's suggestion for those who need a BSS fix sooner than later?
"Just take those records, make a mix, call it a Social Scene record. I'm fine with it."
As far as Social Scene's future is concerned, Drew remains adamant that the group will return. He's just not sure who will be there with him and Canning when they reconvene.
"I think Canning would just blow the whistle, and we'll see who returns. Everyone's doing different things now. Life is very different from when this all started, and that's on a personal and musical level. So you don't know who wants to continue and who wants to do what. I understand we'll be around for a long time, but we'll see what happens with it."
