Visit Flaming Lips Alley When You're In Oklahoma City

Flaming Lips Alley Ceremony

The Flaming Lips have long been revered by music geeks, but now they're about to be recognized by politicians in their hometown of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The alt.rock quartet may have an alley named after them, one that a reporter for local newspaper The Oklahoman described as "littered with open dumpsters and poorly lit at night." That really doesn't sound like the kind of place that a fun-loving band who often perform in animal costumes would hang out, but the group have approved the idea and are said to be flattered by the possible adoption of the name Flaming Lips Alley.

"I look at it as a fitting way to honour them, and not just all they've accomplished, but how they've done it," Oklahoma City mayor Mick Cornett told MTV News. "At first, we were slightly concerned that naming a previously unnamed alleyway after them might not be very appropriate, but we reached out to them with the idea, and their management gave us their blessing."

The alley is located in a high-traffic area near the railroad tracks in Bricktown, the city's downtown entertainment district. And Cornett disputed the newspaper's description, claiming that it's "very high-profile and very safe and clean."

The city is also looking to name actual streets after two other homegrown artists, country star Vince Gill and jazz musician Charlie Christian.

The motions must first be passed by city council and, if approved as expected, the names would become official within 30 to 60 days.
