Nirmala Basnayake Leaves Controller.Controller

Nirmala Basnayake has left Controller.Controller, putting the future of the popular Toronto post-punk electro-rock band in question.

Basnayake joined the group four years ago as their singer, and has also written lyrics while developing into a dynamic live performer.

"Nirmala has really evolved over the last few years with Controller.Controller," says the group's manager, Linda Bush.

"I remember when I first saw her she appeared a little understated, but then she got on the stage and exuded this mystery and raw sexy confidence. Of course there was that voice. Over the years she seemed to find herself on stage, while still competing with Scott [Kaija] and Colwyn [Llewelyn-Thomas]' duelling guitars, dodging Ronnie [Morris]' bass and holding together Jeff [Scheven]'s drum kit.

"As well as front the band, Nirmala found the time to cultivate a community among fans and friends through her regular posts and photos of the people she met on the road. They're going to miss her, and so will I. I'm really proud of everything we all accomplished together, and wish Nirmy all the best."

Controller.Controller released both their History EP in 2003 and their X-Amounts full-length debut a year ago through Toronto's Paper Bag Records. They also secured record deals in Europe, Australia and Japan. The band toured extensively, both at home and abroad, with the likes of The Cult, Death From Above 1979, OK Go and The Organ.

The group's Oct. 20 show scheduled for Toronto's Mod Club has been cancelled. The remaining band members are deciding where their future lies.
