Who The Hell Are You? Five Blank Pages

Five Blank Pages

It's Wednesday, and that means another installment of Who The Hell Are You?, where we profile indie bands, labels and organizations. This week, we're talking to Five Blank Pages. If you'd like to see your musical entity featured in future weeks, write to chart@chartattack.com with the subject heading "Who The Hell Are You?" or something to that effect.

Who are you?
We are Five Blank Pages. I'm Noyan and I play guitar and sing. Pinar plays keyboards and sings, Chelen plays drums and sings, and Rajiv plays bass and dances erratically.

Where are you from?
We were originally based in Brampton, but we moved to Toronto about a year or so ago. Rajiv joined us last February from the distant land of Newfoundland. Well, he moved to Toronto first, and then he became our little brother, against his will.

When did you start playing music?
It all started when I wanted to play my own songs for people in 2002 after keeping them secret in my room for almost a decade. That project slowly evolved into a more "band" thing in 2003, which was a lot more fun and expressive. Plus, my then-girlfriend-now-wife Pinar learned bass for it and my sister stepped in on drums. How could that not be fun?

Describe your music in 100 words or less.
East coast-flavoured indie pop-rock with three-part-harmony and a pinch of lime. Actually, a whole lot of lime. This may or may not be related to our love affair with ginger ale.

How was your recent release recorded?
Very carefully and with a lot of love. Our last release was a song called "She Sleeps Soundly," which we donated to A Compilation For Reach For The Rainbow (Basement Recording Co./MapleMusic), which also featured music by Hayden,Joel Plaskett, Raising The Fawn, The Inbreds, A Northern Chorus, Hawksley Workman, Rheostatics, Peter Elkas, Ben Somer and many more. We recorded it with Greg Dawson (The Junction, The Vulcan Dub Squad, Moneen) in Brampton, as we did with our debut EP, Spaces To Occupy And Abandon, in 2004.

How committed are you to making music a full-time career?
That's a toughie. We all love playing music, so I guess we'll cross all those little bridges when and if we come to them. Er... what I meant to say is that we would kill anything and everything for music. Yeah, let's go with that. Yeah.

What are your day jobs?
I work at a booking agency, Pinar handles things of a legal nature, Chelen is a graphic designer and Rajiv is a doctor — at least he ends every sentence with, "trust me, I'm a doctor."

Where can people find your music, either on the web or in stores?
The wonders of retail distribution have afforded people the convenience of being able to purchase our CD wares at HMV, Sam's and other major music retailers. You can also buy our CDs and T-shirts at the MapleMusic and Sonic Unyon websites.

What's something that you'd like our readers to know about?
We're playing November 3 at Toronto's Edge 102 studios. Before that, we'll be heading to Halifax, Montreal, Barrie and a few other shnazzy towns we miss. We're almost finished writing our first full-length album, too. Look for it on Sunday League Records in the winter/spring of 2007 — pretty please with sugar on top. And last but not least, check us out online on our website and our MySpace page. Come say "Hi" to us at shows. And bring us ginger ales, please.
