Rare Bad Brains Recordings Coming On DVD And CD

Bad Brains

Bad Brains, the Rastafarian punks who introduced the world to a new kind of music when they formed in Washington, D.C in 1979, will be the stars of a forthcoming DVD and CD from MVD Entertainment.

The quartet mixed hardcore punk songs that they played incredibly fast with riddim-filled roots reggae numbers and earned legendary status despite never really appealing to much more than cult audiences in major cities. Guitarist Dr. Know, singer H.R., bassist Darryl Jennifer and drummer Earl Hudson released their self-titled debut album on cassette only through ROIR in 1982, the same year they closed out with three late December shows at the soon-to-be-closed CBGB in New York City.

The best of those performances were captured on video and the Bad Brains: Live CBGB 1982 DVD will be released on September 26. More than four hours of rare footage have been culled down to 60 minutes. Liner notes for the package were written by Big Takeover magazine's Jack Rabid. A CD featuring the same material will follow on Halloween.

These days, Jennifer is best known to Canadian music fans as the producer of Bedouin Soundclash's breakthrough album, Sounding A Mosaic. Here are the tracks on Bad Brains: Live CBGB 1982:
