It's Curtains For Former Deerhoof Member Chris Cohen

The Curtains

Singer/guitarist Chris Cohen left Deerhoof earlier this year to dedicate himself fully to his original indie rock band, The Curtains, and the payoff will come with Asthmatic Kitty's Oct. 24 release of the group's fourth album, Calamity.

Cohen formed The Curtains in San Francisco in 2000 with Trevor Shimizu and Jamie Peterson, who recorded their limited-edition Fast Talks debut album in 2001. Peterson and Shimizu were replaced by Deerhoof synthesizer player Greg Saunier and drummer Andrew Maxwell shortly after that, and they recorded Flybys in 2003 and Vehicles Of Travel in 2004.

Cohen played most of the instruments on Calamity and produced it, but a number of friends helped him out where needed. Nedelle Torrisi contributed guitar and vocal harmonies, keyboardist Annie Lewandowski also added backing vocals, and Corey Fogel (Mae-Shi) played drums. All three have now joined Cohen in the touring version of The Curtains. Half-Handed Cloud (a.k.a. John Ringhofer) played trombone on some songs on the record.

Cohen joined Deerhoof as a second guitarist in 2002. Along with that band's John Dieterich and Dilute drummer Jay Pellicci, they released a self-titled album under the name Natural Dreamers in 2004.

Here are the songs on Calamity:

"Go Lucky"
"Green Water"
"Wysteria"
"The Thousandth Face"
"World's Most Dangerous Woman"
"Tornado Traveler's Fear"
"Roscomare"
"Old Scott Rd."
"Calamity"
"Invisible Thing"
"Brunswick Stew"
"Fell On A Rock & Broke It"
"Spinning Top"
